Berezovo


Berezovo

 

(formerly Berezov), an urban-type settlement; center of Berezovo Raion, Khanty-Mansi National Okrug, Tiumen’ Oblast, RSFSR. Pier on the left bank of the Sever-naia Sos’va (a tributary of the Ob’). Population, 7,000 (1969).

There is a fish-processing combine and a creamery in Berezovo. Near Berezovo there are large deposits of natural gas (discovered in 1953). Berezovo was founded in 1593 as a fortress, and in 1782 it became a district city in Tobol’sk Province. In the 18th century Berezovo was a place of exile for disgraced dignitaries, including Peter I the Great’s closest associate, A. D. Menshikov, the outstanding diplomat V. L. Dolgorukov, and A. I. Osterman; in the 19th century, for the Decembrists; and at the beginning of the 20th century, for revolutionaries.
