Free Shooters Revolt

a partisan movement in Skane (Scania), Blekinge, and Halland, provinces which were taken from Denmark and incorporated into Sweden in 1658. The movement developed at the time of the so-called Skåne War between Denmark and Sweden (1676-79). The local population, which was hostile to Swedish rule, rose up in support of the Danish troops that had invaded Skåne and other provinces. The spontaneously formed groups of armed peasants were joined by cavalry detachments sent by the Danish command to operate in the Swedish rear. These “free shooters” are one of the first examples of partisan warfare being combined with regular army operations.
