Galley Press

Galley Press

a press on which galley proofs are obtained from set type. It is a simplified, small printing press. The tray of set type is placed on the horizontal board of the press; rollers applying ink and a printing cylinder that presses the paper against the type are then passed over the type. The press is operated by an electric motor. Also in use are hand-operated galley presses similar to platen presses, in which paper is pressed against the composed type with a flat cast-iron plate, and presses with a rubber-coated metal roller that is passed manually over the type.
