Galliard

an ancient dance of Romance origin done to music in triple time at a moderately fast tempo. The galliard was widely known in Europe from the late 15th to the 17th centuries. It was performed after a slow, quadruple-time pavane. The instrumental suite developed from this pair of contrasting dances. By the beginning of the 18th century the galliard existed only as a part of the suite.
