Goodrich, Chauncey Allen

(1790–1860) lexicographer, scholar, theologian; born in New Haven, Conn. (son-in-law of Noah Webster). As professor of rhetoric and later of theology at Yale College, he wrote several influential works on Greek and Latin grammar. He also prepared an English-language edition of the Bible. He supervised the abridgment of Noah Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language, prepared by Joseph E. Worcester in 1829, and served as the chief editor of the revised and enlarged edition of Webster's dictionary (1847), the first in the continuing series published by G. & C. Merriam.
