Galloway Cattle

cattle bred for meat. Developed in Scotland in the vicinity of Galloway (hence the name). The cattle are hornless and are generally black (although dark brown and grayish yellow animals are found), with a broad white strip from the rear angles of the shoulder blades to the loins. Galloway cattle have a proportional build and rich musculature. The bulls weigh 600-700 kg, the cows 400-450 kg. The slaughter yield is 65-70 percent. The meat is evenly layered with fat and has a good taste. The milk productivity is about 1,500 kg. At the end of the 19th century Galloway cattle began to be exported to Canada and the USA. A small number of them were brought into the USSR beginning in 1963 in order to study the possibility of crossbreeding them with other breeds.
