town (1990 pop. 19,154), alt. 6,515 ft (1,986 m), seat of McKinley co., NW N.Mex., on the Puerco River near the Ariz. line; inc. 1891. It is a rail and trade center in a large mining, timber, and ranching area. Located in a region populated by the Navajo, Zuñi, and Hopi, its economy is based upon local trade. The city's principal employer is the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. Uranium, oil, natural gas, and coal are among the minerals found and processed. Native American jewelry and crafts are produced, and tourism is important. Nearby natural and archaeological wonders draw many visitors, as does the intertribal ceremonial held every August. A U.S. public health service hospital is in Gallup.
