释义 | Goldman, HettyGoldman, Hetty(1881–1972) archaeologist; born in New York City. She earned an A.B. at Bryn Mawr College and her A.M. and Ph.D. at Radcliffe. She turned to fieldwork while in Athens on a fellowship, specializing in prehistoric archaeology of the Greeks and other eastern Mediterranean peoples. She was one of the first female directors of an archaeological excavation (at Halae, Greece, 1911–14) and went on to direct numerous excavations for the Fogg Museum and Bryn Mawr in Greece, Asia Minor, and Yugoslavia at sites including Eutresis, Greece (1924–27) and Colophon (1922, 1925) and Tarsus (1934–39, 1947, 1948), Turkey. She had a reputation as an unusually systematic and accurate fieldworker; published accounts of her digs such as Excavations at Eutresis in Boeotia (1931) and Excavations at Gozlu Kule Tarsus (3 vols. 1950–63) became classics. She was the first female professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1936–47). |
