Golovnin Volcano

Golovnin Volcano

an active volcano on the southern part of Kunashir in the Kuril Islands. An annular crest, 547 m high, surrounds a caldera 3–4.7 km wide, at the bottom of which are four small domes and two explosion craters. Lake Kipiashchee lies in one of these craters; Lake Goriachee is found at the northern part of the caldera at an altitude of 130 m. The solfataras give off hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. The volcano is named in honor of V. M. Golovnin.
