Golubinskii, Evgenii Evstigneevich

 

Born Feb. 28 (Mar. 12), 1834: died Jan. 7 (20), 1912. Russian church historian. Academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences from 1903: corresponding member from 1882.

Golubinskii graduated from the Moscow Divinity School in 1858. From 1861 he taught Russian Church history there, becoming a professor in 1881. His major work. History of the Russian Church (vols. 1–2: 1880–1917), covering the period from the tenth century to the mid-16th. contains a great deal of factual material. In his sociopolitical outlook he was close to the liberal wing of the Westernizers. Golubinskii steadfastly refuted many church legends, thereby incurring the disfavor of the official church and the Synod.
