Frei test

Frei test

(frī), an intracutaneous diagnostic test for lymphogranuloma venereum: the Frei antigen is usually a sterile preparation of inactivated chlamydiae from domestic fowl; a positive-delayed type reaction is not diagnostically specific for lymphogranuloma venereum and is rarely used. Synonym(s): Frei-Hoffmann reaction

Frei test

An obsolete test for lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), in which intradermal inoculation of LGV-infected yolk sac (the Frei test) is used to detect a delayed-type (i.e., cell-mediated) hypersensitivity reaction. However, the antigen is group reactive; thus, it is also positive in psittacosis and occasionally with oculogenital Chlamydia trachomatis infection. Conversely, a negative Frei test result does not exclude the diagnosis of LGV. The complement fixation and microimmunofluorescent test are more sensitive than is the Frei test is, which is no longer used in the working medical practice.

Frei test

A skin test for LYMPHOGRANULOMA VENEREUM, now of historic interest only. (Wilhelm Siegmund Frei, 1886–1943, German dermatologist).
