On the northeastern border of VA, west of Washington, D.C. Established 1801 as Alexandria County of the Dist. of Columbia; in 1846 county was returned to VA; renamed March 16, 1920. Arlington functions politically as a county in VA. Name Origin: For the home of George Washington Parke Custis (1781-1857), grandson of Martha Washington (1732-1802), named for the 1st Earl of Arlington, Henry Bennet (1618-85) who shared Charles II's (1630-85) grant of the colony of VA. It was later the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee (1807-70)
