George of Dalmatia

(also Giorgio da Sebenico, Juraj Dal-matinac). Born 1410’s in Zadar; died October 1473 in Šibenik. Dalmatian sculptor and architect of the Early Renaissance.

George of Dalmatia studied in Vienna. He was one of the architects of the Rector’s Palace in Dubrovnik and the Cathedral in Sibenik (1444–73); he is also known for the Loggia dei Mercanti in Ancona (1450’s). In these stylistically transitional works he combined traits of the Gothic and the Renaissance.

George of Dalmatia also sculpted the heads on the eastern façade of the Cathedral in Šibenik (mid-15th century), which are marked by an expressive use of form, and the altar of the Cathedral in Split (marble, 1448).
