Glinkov, Rodion

Glinkov, Rodion Andreianovich

Born 1729; died 1789. Russian mechanic.

In his spinning factory in Serpeisk (in present-day Kaluga Oblast), Glinkov in 1760 was the first to build carding and multispindled flax-spinning machines, driven by water-wheels. Glinkov’s carding machine, operated by two workers, replaced the labor of 30 people. His spinning machine had 30 spindles with bobbins, which turned at what was for the period a high speed (1,260 rpm). The machine had a mechanical rewinder, making use of the principle of continuous spinning. The machine increased labor productivity five times.
