(jē'nē-ō-glos'ŭs mŭs'ĕl) One of the paired lingual muscles; origin, mental spine of the mandible; insertion, lingual fascia beneath the mucous membrane and epiglottis; action, depresses and protrudes the tongue; nerve supply, hypoglossal.
Synonym(s): musculus genioglossus [TA] , genioglossus, musculus geniohyoglossus.

Tongue muscle. Origin: genial tubercle on inside of mandibular symphysis. Insertion: ventral tongue, hyoid bone. Nerve: hypoglossal (CN XII). Action: protrudes and depresses tongue. See also: muscle
