Fren, Khristian Danilovich

 

Born May 23, 1782, in Rostock; died Aug. 16, 1851, in St. Petersburg. Russian Oriental historian and numismatist. Academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1817).

Fren graduated from the University of Rostock in 1803. From 1807 to 1817 he was a professor of Oriental languages at the University of Kazan. The founder of the Asian Museum, he served as its first director from 1818 to 1842. Fren’s numismatic works laid the foundations for Oriental numismatics in Russia and Europe.

His works on the use of Arabic sources to study the history of ancient Rus’ represented an epoch in scholarship.
