Stephänescu, George

Born Dec. 13, 1843, in Bucharest; died there Apr. 25, 1925. Rumanian composer, teacher, and conductor.

Stephănescu studied at the conservatories in Bucharest from 1864 to 1867 and in Paris from 1867 to 1871. From 1877 to 1890 he was a conductor and composer at the National Theater in Bucharest. A seminal figure in the Rumanian school of composition, he made a particularly important contribution to orchestral and chamber music. Stephănescu composed the first Rumanian symphony in 1869. He founded and was the conductor of several professional opera companies in Rumania that paved the way for the creation of a national opera theater. Stephănescu, a professor of voice and opera at the Bucharest Conservatory from 1872 to 1904, helped develop a national school of vocal music.
