George, Walter F.

George, Walter F. (Franklin)

(1878–1957) U.S. senator; born in Preston, Ga. A lawyer and judge, he went on to the U.S. Senate (Dem., Ga.; 1922–57). Although opposed to many of President Franklin Roosevelt's domestic policies, he supported U.S. participation in World War II, the United Nations, and NATO. As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1954–57), he maintained his internationalist stance.
