Gorlovka-Shcherbinovka Strike of 1916

 

a strike by miners and metalworkers in the Gorlovka-Shcherbinovka industrial region in the Donbas. It was organized by the Bolsheviks. The strike committee included A. B. Batov, S. Lapin (V. Kurochkin), N. Goldobin, I. Tsygankov, and I. Iurchenko. It began on April 19 and by May as many as 45,000 miners and 5,000 metalworkers of the Petrovskii Plant (near Enakievo) were taking part in the strike. The strikers were protesting the increased cost of living and were demanding higher pay. Leaflets of the Donetsk Bolsheviks were distributed among them, calling for the overthrow of tsarism. On May 2, during a rally of the striking workers, tsarist troops opened fire on them, killing four and wounding several others. On May 11 the strike was suppressed by armed force and by extensive repressive measures.
