gamma camera
gamma cameran. A camera used in medical diagnostic imaging that tracks the distribution of radioactive tracers in body tissues.gamma camera n (Medicine) a medical apparatus that detects gamma rays emitted from a person's body after the administration of a radioactive drug and so produces images of the organ being investigated gamma camera
gamma camera[′gam·ə ‚kam·rə] (engineering) An instrument consisting of a large, thin scintillation crystal or array of photomultiplier tubes, a multichannel collimator, and circuitry to analyze the pulses produced by the photomultipliers; used to visualize the distribution of radioactive compounds in the human body. gamma camera

Because the Anger camera is by far the most frequently used type of gamma (or scintillation) camera today, the terms are often used interchangeably.gamma camera (scintillation camera) an electronic instrument that produces photographs or cathode-ray tube images of the gamma ray emissions from organs containing tracer compounds. Synonym(s): scintillation camera. gamma camera A device consisting of a large crystal of a material that produces a tiny point of light where it is struck by a gamma ray. Between the crystal and the subject is interposed a thick lead plate drilled with numerous parallel holes (a collimator) that ensures that only parallel rays strike the crystal. In this way an image is formed on the crystal corresponding to the pattern of gamma rays given off by the subject. The gamma camera is used in conjunction with selective radionuclides that concentrate in certain parts of the body, such as the bones, the thyroid gland or a tumour.
