Howard, George William Frederick

 

(the seventh earl of Carlisle). Born Apr. 18, 1802, in London; died there Dec. 5, 1864. British political figure; a Whig.

Howard was an active supporter of the parlimentary reformof 1832. He was secretary for Ireland from 1835 to 1841, becom-ing a member of the cabinet in 1839. Howard was the first amongthe Whig aristocrats occupying an official post to come out insupport of the Anti-Corn Law League.
