GlobigerinaGlobigerinaa genus of protozoan animals of the order Foraminifera of the class Rhizopoda. The porous calcareous shell of Globigerina consists of several interconnected, spherical chambers. The surfaces of the chambers are covered with numerous long, radial needles, which facilitate floating in water. Globigerina, as distinguished from other rhizopods, is not benthonic but free swimming, and it is found in large numbers in plankton in warm seas. There are several tens of species, including many fossils. The shells of dead Globigerina fall to the bottom of the sea and form the principal constituent of deepwater oceanic globigerina ooze. GlobigerinaGlobigerinaooze the CALCAREOUS mud that occurs on the sea bed as a result of the aggregation of the shells of dead Foraminifera, Globigerina being the commonest genus of shell present.globigerina
