Gorj

a district in southwestern Rumania, on the southern slopes of the southern Carpathians and adjacent parts of the Getic plateau. Area, 5,600 sq km; population, 312,800 (1969). The administrative center is the city of Tirgu-Jiu. In the years of socialist construction, new deposits of oil (Bilteni and Ticleni) and lignite (output of up to 8 million tons at Rovinari, Motru, and Plostina were discovered and developed. The oil is delivered to Ploeşti by pipeline and rail. Anthracite (Schela) and graphite (Baia-de-Fier) are mined. There is woodworking (a combine in Tirgu-Jiu), production of construction materials Birşesti and Bilteni), food industries (tobacco and confectionery), and garment industry (Tirgu-Jiu). Corn, wheat, and tobacco are cultivated. There are orchards (primarily plum trees) and vineyards. In 1970 there were 93,500 head of cattle, 62,000 pigs, and 220,000 sheep.
