Gorky

also Gorki, Maksim also Maxim Pen name of Aleksei Maksimovich Peshkov. 1868-1936. Russian writer who supported the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 and helped develop socialist realism as the officially accepted literary aesthetic. His works include The Life of Klim Samgin (1927-1936), an unfinished cycle of novels.

a city; administrative center of Goretskii Raion, Mogilev Oblast, Byelorussian SSR, on the Pronia River (Dnieper basin), 3 km from the Pogodino railroad station (on the Orsha-Krichev line). Population, 22,000 (1970).

Gorki has a flax-treatment plant, a butter and cheese plant, a cannery (producing fruits, vegetables, and pickled products), a juice and extract plant, and a plant producing rein-forced-concrete items. There is also extraction of peat. The Byelorussian Agricultural Academy is located in Gorki.
