Gandak

 

a river in Nepal and India, left tributary of the Ganges. Length, 650 km. It rises in the Himalayas under the name Kali Gandaki, in the central part of the Greater Himalayas, near Sharba pass. Flowing in a deep valley, it crosses almost the entire mountain system. After emerging from the mountains, it flows along the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Water discharge is from 200-400 cu m per sec in the winter and early spring to 15,000 cu m per sec in the summer. Destructive floods are frequent. The Gandak has great irrigative value and is used for floating timber and local navigation.
