Gold Star
in the USSR, the name of a medal awarded to persons who have received the title Hero of the Soviet Union. The medal was established by the Aug. 1, 1939, Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and was named Hero of the Soviet Union until Oct. 16, 1939. The Gold Star is a pentagonal star with smooth double-faceted arms on the face side. The medal is attached to the clothing by a rectangular ribbon and is worn on the left side of the chest above orders and other medals.
