单词 | goldthorpe, john |
释义 | Goldthorpe, JohnGoldthorpe, John(1935-) British sociologist best known for his empirical work on SOCIAL STRATIFICATION, CLASS and SOCIAL MOBILITY, which include (with David LOCKWOOD and others) the influential AFFLUENT WORKER studies (Goldthorpe, Lockwood et al., 1968-69), and the Nuffield College, Oxford, SOCIAL MOBILITY Studies, directed by him, published as Social Mobility and Class Structure in Modern Britain (1980, revised 1987). The methodological implications, as much as the empirical conclusions, of both sets of studies have been important (see Goldthorpe and Hope, The Social Grading ofOccupations, 1974) and subject to considerable debate (see Bulmer, 1975; see also MULTI DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL STRATIFICATION, CLASS IMAGERY, OCCUPATIONAL SCALES). Goldthorpe has also made occasional trenchant interventions in debates on sociological theory, on the virtues and vices of ETHNOMETHODOLOGY, on INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS, on class and gender, and on INFLATION.
