Gorshkov, Georgii Stepanovich

Born Feb. 15, 1921, in Irkutsk. Soviet volcanologist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966).

Gorshkov was the director of the Institute of Volcanology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1966 until 1970 and became the president of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior in 1971. His main works concern the present vulcanism found in the Kuril Islands and on Kamchatka. Gorshkov proposed a new classification of explosive eruptions and a method for the seismic location of magma chambers. He is the author of the hypothesis according to which the vulcanism generated within the earth’s upper mantle is virtually independent of the composition of the earth’s crust.
