Gorskii, Ivan Ivanovich

Born Aug. 31 (Sept. 12), 1893, in Rybinsk. Soviet geologist and paleontologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1943).

In 1935, Gorskii became a professor at the Leningrad Institute of Mines. From 1943 to 1947 he was the director of the Ail-Union Scientific Research Institute of Geology and, from 1947 to 1952, chairman of the presidium of the Karelian-Finnish branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Between 1950 and 1960 he was director of the Laboratory of the Geology of Coal of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. From 1960 to 1968 he was deputy academician-secretary of the section of geological and geographical sciences (subsequently the section of earth sciences) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His main works have been on the geology and coal deposits of the Urals, Kazakhstan, and Middle Asia. He has also studied the fauna of the corals of the Upper Paleozoic found in the USSR. Gorskii collaborated on the compilation of geological maps of the Urals, the European part of the USSR, and the Caucasus. He also collaborated on a survey map of the projected coal resources of the USSR (1956). In 1970 he received the A. P. Karpinskii Gold Medal. He has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
