Gorvits, Aleksandr Borisovich

Born 1897, in Kiev; died there Jan. 20, 1918. Active participant in the struggle to establish Soviet power in the Ukraine. Member of the Communist Party from 1915.

Gorvits studied at the Kiev Commercial Institute. After the February Revolution of 1917 he was a member of the Kiev committee of the RSDLP (Bolshevik), a member of the executive committee of the Kiev soviet, and a member of the editorial board of the Bolshevik newspaper Golos sotsial-demokrata. Gorvits was one of the organizers of the Red Guard and a leader of the armed uprising in Kiev in October 1917, and he was a member of the Kiev Military Revolutionary Committee. At the first All-Ukrainian Congress of Soviets in 1917 he was elected a member of the All-Ukrainian Central Executive Committee. He actively participated in the preparation and leadership of the uprising against the Ukrainian Central Rada in January 1918 in Kiev, and he was a member of the Military Revolutionary Committee. Gorvits was captured by Petliura’s forces and killed after being cruelly tortured.
