In the Real World, systems (hardware or software)often go through two stages of release testing: Alpha(in-house) and Beta (out-house?). Beta releases are generallymade available to a small number of lucky (or unlucky),trusted customers.

BT is usually performed on-site under the same working conditions for which it was designed, in order to identify and resolve potential problems associated with its use. BT provides both a different perspective and a real-world example of the product’s performance under working conditions, as it will be put through various unanticipated uses and applications. BT has the advantage to an end-user of being at the forefront of a technology, and allows the user to add specific features in the marketed version of the product.
