An infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus of the herpes family. It is spread by close contact, especially kissing, and is commonest in young adults. The disease appears after an incubation period of 4–7 weeks. There is fever, weakness, headache, sore throat, and enlargement of lymph nodes and the spleen. Spontaneous recovery, within a month, is usual.
