Gansevoort, Peter
(găns`vo͝ort), 1749–1812, soldier in the American Revolution, b. Albany, N.Y. He served in the Quebec campaign and in 1777 was in command of Fort Schuyler (former Fort Stanwix). In the Saratoga campaign he gallantly defended that post against British siege under Gen. Barry St. LegerSt. Leger, Barry,1737–89, British officer in the American Revolution. In the French and Indian Wars he served at Louisburg (1758) and with Gen. James Wolfe at Quebec.
..... Click the link for more information. until reports that Gen. Benedict Arnold was approaching frightened the British into retreat. He again won favorable notice for his part in the campaign (1779) of Gen. John Sullivan against the Iroquois and the Loyalists in W New York.
