Gil y Carrasco, Enrique

Born July 15, 1815, in Villafranca del Bierzo, León Province; died Feb. 22, 1846, in Berlin. Spanish writer.

Gil y Carrasco’s poems and artículos de costumbre (sketches of everyday life) are devoted to his native province, as is his novel The Lord of Bembibre (1844). Antifeudal and democratic in character, the novel synthesizes the three major trends in the Spanish historical novel of the romantic period—that is, it combines lyric elements with elements of the historical chronicle and adventure story.
