Dzhagarov, Georgi

 

Born July 14, 1925, in the village of Biala, Sliven Okrug. Bulgarian writer and public figure. Participant in the antifascist movement. Became a member of the Bulgarian Communist Party in 1945 and of the party’s Central Committee in 1966. Deputy chairman of the State Council of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria from 1971. Bulgarian People’s Master of Culture (1971). Chairman of the Union of Bulgarian Writers from 1966.

Dzhagarov graduated from Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow in 1954. In his verse collections My Songs (1954), Lyrics (1956), and In Moments of Silence (1958), he revealed the spiritual world of the fighter against fascism and the active builder of socialism. His verse is characterized by a dramatic tension in lyrical feeling and by a passionate commitment to the party. His dramas The Doors Close (1960), Tomorrow Is Another Day (1962), and The Prosecutor (1965; awarded the Dimitrov Prize in 1966) deal with the moral conflicts of the contemporary world and the problem of modern man’s social obligations.
