Georgievskii, Sergei Mikhailovich

 

Born Oct. 7 (19), 1851, in Kostroma; died July 26 (Aug. 7), 1893,in Metz, France. Russian sinologue.

Georgievskii graduated from the historical philological department of Moscow University in 1873 and the oriental department of St. Petersburg University in 1880. In 1890 he became a professor at St. Petersburg University. His master’s thesis was entitled The First Period of Chinese History (to Emperor Ch’in Shih Huang-ti) (1885). His doctoral dissertation was entitled An Analysis of the Hieroglyphic Writing System of the Chinese as a Reflection of the History of the Life of the Centuries-Old Chinese (1889). Georgievskii’s works are rich in factual material, although their generalizations in many respects have lost their scholarly significance.
