Georgii Egorov

Born Oct. 30, 1918, in Mestonovo, in what is now Volosovo Raion, Leningrad Oblast. Soviet military leader. Admiral of the fleet (1973). Member of the CPSU since 1942.

Egorov entered the navy in 1936. He graduated from the Higher Naval School in 1940, a school for submarine officers in 1944, and the Naval Academy in 1959. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45 he served in the Baltic Fleet as an assistant submarine commander and a submarine commander. After the war, Egorov was commander of a submarine unit and, later, chief of staff and commander of a larger unit.

Egorov was chief of staff of the Northern Fleet from 1963 to 1967 and deputy commander in chief of the navy in charge of combat training from 1967 to 1972. He was the Northern Fleet’s commander from 1972 to 1977. In June 1977, Egorov was named chief of the main naval headquarters and first deputy commander of the Soviet Navy.

Egorov was chosen a candidate member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1976. He was a deputy to the ninth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, three Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of the Patriotic War First Class, the Order of the Red Star, and various medals. Egorov has also received foreign orders and medals.
