Georgii Folbort

Fol’bort, Georgii Vladimirovich

Born Jan. 23 (Feb. 4), 1885, in St. Petersburg; died Apr. 17, 1960, in Kiev. Soviet physiologist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1951). Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR (1953).

Fol’bort graduated from the Military Medical Academy in 1909. He was a student and co-worker of I. P. Pavlov. From 1912 to 1926, Fol’bort worked at the Military Medical Academy and was at the same time a professor at Leningrad University, from 1923 to 1926. He was head of subdepartments at the Kharkov Medical Institute from 1926 to 1946 and at the Kiev Medical Institute from 1946 to 1960. From 1946 to 1948, he also worked at the Institute of Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and from 1949 to 1960, at the A. A. Bogomolets Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. His major works dealt with the higher central nervous system activity, blood circulation, digestion, and the physiology of fatigue and recovery. He was the discoverer of negative conditioned reflexes.

Fol’bort was awarded the Order of Lenin and the I. P. Pavlov Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1942).
