Georgii Ivanovich Vorobev

Born Apr. 2 (15), 1914, in the village of Kideksha, in what is now Suzdal’ Raion, Vladimir Oblast. Soviet state and party figure. Doctor of economic sciences (1968); professor (1970). Member of the CPSU since 1939.

The son of a peasant, Vorob’ev graduated from the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy in 1946. He worked as an agronomist from 1934 to 1939 and began party work in 1941. In the period 1949 to 1952 he served as the representative of the Council on Kolkhoz Affairs of the government of the USSR for the Turkmen SSR, the Udmurt ASSR, and Leningrad Oblast. Vorob’ev served as second secretary of the Leningrad oblast committee of the CPSU in 1953 and 1954 and as chairman of the Leningrad oblast executive committee from 1954 to 1957. He was first secretary of the Udmurt oblast committee from 1957 to 1959.

In 1959 and 1960, Vorob’ev was a member of the administrative apparatus of the Central Committee of the CPSU. He held the post of first secretary of the Krasnodar Krai Committee of the CPSU from 1960 to 1966. From 1966 to 1970, Vorob’ev was deputy minister of agriculture of the USSR; he became chairman of the State Forestry Committee of the Council of Ministers of the USSR in 1970 and chairman of the State Forestry Committee of the USSR in 1978. He served as a member of the Central Auditing Commission of the CPSU from 1956 to 1961.

From 1961 to 1966, Vorob’ev was a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU. He was named a candidate member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1976. Vorob’ev was a member of the Bureau of the Central Committee of the CPSU for the RFSFR from 1959 to 1961.

A deputy to the fourth to sixth and eighth through tenth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Vorob’ev has been awarded three Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, two other orders, and various medals.
