Gaponov-Grekhov, Andrei Viktorovich

Born June 7, 1926, in Moscow. Soviet physicist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968; corresponding member, 1964).

Gaponov-Grekhov graduated from the University of Gorky in 1949. From 1952 to 1955 he worked in the Gorky Polytechnical Institute and from 1955 at the Scientific Research Radiophysical Institute of the University of Gorky. He has written fundamental works in the field of electrodynamics, the physics of plasma, physical electronics, the electrodynamics of a nonlinear medium, and the theory of the variations of distributed nonlinear systems. He and M. A. Miller proposed a method of the channelization and acceleration of particles and of plasma with the help of nonuniform high-frequency fields. He has conducted theoretical and experimental research of induced cyclotron radiation, which allowed the construction of mazers on a cyclotronic resonance (State Prize of the USSR, 1967).
