Iokubonis, Gediminas Al’bino

Born Mar. 8, 1927, in Kupishkis. Soviet sculptor. Honored Art Worker of the Lithuanian SSR (1965). Corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1967).

Iokubonis studied at the Kaunas Institute of Applied and Decorative Art (1946–51) and at the Art Institute of the Lithuanian SSR in Vilnius (1952) under I. I. Mikenas. An audacious generalization of forms and an energetic manifestation of the plastic structure of the volume typify his monuments and sculptures, which display national-romantic spirit. Iokubonis’ works include The Chairman of the Kolkhoz (bronze, 1957), and a portrait of I. Ianulenis (granite, 1962), both in the Art Museum of the Lithuanian SSR, Vilnius; a monument to the victims of fascism in the village of Pirchiupis (granite, 1960; Lenin Prize, 1963; architect V. P. Gabriunas); a portrait of I. Venozhinskis (granite, 1964); and a monument to Lenin in Il’ich square in Moscow (bronze and granite, 1967; architect V. A. Chekanauskas).
