Born Dec. 12, 1902, in Kyoto; died Mar. 17, 1943, in Sakai. Japanese labor leader.

After graduation from primary school, Kokuryo worked as a weaver in a textile factory in Kyoto, where he became acquainted with socialist literature. In 1921 he helped found and lead the united trade union in Kyoto. Kokuryo joined the Communist Party of Japan (CPJ) in September 1922; in 1927 he was elected to the Central Committee of the CPJ and became a party leader. He worked in left-wing trade unions from 1922 to 1928 and represented Japanese left-wing trade unions at the Fourth Congress of the Profintern in March-April 1928. Arrested for Communist activity in October 1928, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison and died during his term.
