FURIN
FURIN
A gene on chromosome 15q26.1 that encodes a ubiquitous endoprotease, located in the trans-Golgi network membrane of the Golgi apparatus, which is involved in constitutive secretory pathways, cleaving proproteins at the RX(K/R)R consensus motif. Furin releases albumin, complement C3 and vWF from their respective precursors.Furin has an inhibition peptide, which serves as an intramolecular chaperone, that is autocatalytically removed in the endoplasmic reticulum and remains non-covalently bound to furin as a potent autoinhibitor. After transport to the trans Golgi, a second cleavage within the inhibition propeptide results in propeptide dissociation and furin activation.
