Furneaux

an island group in the eastern part of Bass Strait, north of the island of Tasmania. The largest islands of the group are Flinders, Cape Barren, and Clarke. The Furneaux Islands have an area of 2,700 sq km and a population of 1,240 (1970); they are part of the Commonwealth of Australia. The western coasts of the islands ore steep and rocky; the eastern coasts have sandy beaches. The interiors are mountainous, with a maximum elevation of 777 m. The islands have a subtropical oceanic climate. Eucalyptus forests are found on the mountain slopes, and grassy vegetation and sparse shrubs grow on the plains. Sheep are raised. The Furneaux Islands were discovered in 1773 by T. Furneaux, the captain of one of the ships of J. Cook’s expedition (1772–75).
