Georgii Stefan

Georgii Stefan

Date of birth unknown; died 1668. Ruler of Moldavia (1653-58).

Having unseated the ruler Vasilii Lupu by means of a plot in 1653, Georgii Stefan sent a delegation to Moscow in 1656 requesting that Moldavia be accepted into the Russian state. He also established friendly relations with his neighbor Bogdan Khmel’nitskii, hoping thus to strengthen his own position in the struggle with Turkey and the Crimean khan. Georgii Stefan was deposed by the Turks in 1658.
