Melikhov, Georgiistepanovich

Born May 11 (24), 1908, in Kharkov. Soviet painter. People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1967).

Melikhov studied at the Kiev Institute of Art from 1935 to 1941 with P. G. Volokidin and F. G. Krichevskii. From 1945 to 1961 he taught at the institute, where he became a professor in 1960. He was secretary of the board of the Artists’ Union of the USSR from 1956 to 1960. In his carefully developed genre scenes, Melikhov endeavors to be psychologically convincing. Among his works are Young Taras Shevchenko in K. P. Briullov’s Studio (1947, Museum of Fine Arts of the Ukrainian SSR, Kiev; State Prize of the USSR, 1948), Gorky in the Ukraine (1957, Gorlovka Museum of Art), and Delegates to the First Congress of the Communist (Bolshevik) Party of the Ukraine in Moscow (1969, property of the Ministry of Culture of the Ukrainian SSR). Melikhov has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
