Georgii Zedgenidze

Zedgenidze, Georgii Artem’evich

 

Born Feb. 21 (Mar. 6), 1902, in Tbilisi. Soviet roentgenologist and radiologist; academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1960). Member of the CPSU since 1939.

Zedgenidze graduated from the Medical School of Tbilisi University in 1927. He was a subdepartment chairman in the Naval Medical Academy and the S. M. Kirov Academy of Military Medicine from 1941 to 1958 and simultaneously (1941-45) a flagship roentgenologist in the naval forces. From 1958 to 1973 he was director of the Institute of Medical Radiology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. His main research deals with the biological effects of ionizing radiation, the radiation therapy of malignant tumors, methods of X-ray examination, and the X-ray diagnosis of bone, joint, gastrointestinal, and lung diseases. He established a school of roentgenologists and radiologists. He was awarded three orders, as well as medals.
