part of the Eastern Carpathians in the Ukrainian SSR. The elevation ranges between 1,400 and 1,500 m; the highest point measures 1,818 m (Mount Syvulia). Composed primarily of sandstone, the Gorgany are dissected by deep transversal valleys of rivers (the Svicha, Lomnitsa, Bystri-tsa, and other rivers) into separate ridges. The slopes of the mountains are covered with beech-fir and spruce forests; above 1,400–1,450 m are elfin pine woodland and subalpine meadows. Rock streams (gorgany) are widespread.
