García Íñiguez, Calixto

Born Aug. 4, 1839, in Holguín; died Dec. 11, 1898, in Washington, D.C. Cuban patriot, general, one of the prominent figures in the Cuban war of independence from Spain (1868-98).

García joined the Liberation Army in October 1868. He directed military operations in Oriente Province. In September 1874 he was taken prisoner and exiled to Spain. He returned to his homeland in 1880 but was once again exiled. In 1896 he made a landing in Oriente Province. He was deputy commander in chief of the Liberation Army and won a number of major victories. With the end of the Spanish-American War and the occupation of Cuba (1898) by the Americans he left in December for the USA at the head of a delegation to clarify the fate of the Liberation Army. He died before he could be received by the president.
