Fritz, John

(1822–1913) mechanical engineer; born in Chester County, Pa. A blacksmith and mechanic, by 1849 he was superintending the building of the Cambria Iron Works (by 1860 the Bethlehem Iron Works) in Johnston, Pa. As an early and innovative "iron master," he designed new machinery and introduced new techniques, such as the Bessemer process, and open-hearth furnaces.
